The Small Hope Bay Lodge is an informal holiday resort located on Andros Island, Bahamas that focuses around the central lodge built of coral rock and Andros pine. Comfortable couches and throw-pillows create a friendly home-like atmosphere. The Lodge houses a dining area, lounge/bar area, game room and reading room.
There is also a small boutique on the premises, a separate building for office administration and guest services and a staffed laundry facility. There is an outdoor patio bar and dining area for summer-night barbecues.
There are no phones (phone/fax/internet for guest use in the office), no newspapers, and no TVs. Emphasis is on a natural environment with relaxing, low-impact lifestyle. There is no dress code -- bare feet, T-shirts, sarongs, anything (except neckties) is perfectly acceptable. |

Twenty-one rooms in cottages located directly on the beach, each handbuilt of coral rock and Andros Pine with overhead ceiling fans (half of the rooms have air-conditioning), locally made furniture, decorated in Androsia Batik fabrics, and all with a view of the sea. Each has private toilet/shower facilities and is fully tiled. King-size beds and single beds are available. There are four two-bedroom cottages for families, as well as a special "honeymoon cottage." At Small Hope Bay Lodge on Andros Island, Bahamas, we have been introducing divers and snorkelers to the Andros Barrier Reef for almost half a century. Whether you're a beginner who wants to try scuba diving or snorkeling for the first time, or an experienced diver seeking a new thrill, let us show you our exciting underwater world. We know Andros diving like nobody else. We've been exploring the Andros Barrier Reef since 1960.
One of the world's longest barrier reefs, and the second largest and most unexplored reef system in the Atlantic, the Andros Barrier Reef offers a dazzling variety of geological and coral formations. There are shallow reefs beginning at ten feet - perfect for snorkeling or shallow diving - to 90 feet or deeper off the wall. If you don't want to go that deep, we're happy to accommodate you. All our multi-level dives provide the option of supervised diving at shallower depths if you prefer. Small Hope is the first dive resort in the Caribbean and has been run by the Birch family since its inception.
There are more than 60 dive sites on the regular Small Hope Bay Lodge schedule, including colorful shallow reefs, coral gardens, wreck dives, breathtaking blue holes and stunning wall dives at the edge of the continental shelf, where the tongue of the ocean plunges to 6,000 feet.

|

Snorkeling is one of our favorite activities at Small Hope Bay, whether it's off the boat - on our daily trips to shallow sites on the sensational Andros Barrier Reef, or right off the beach at Small Hope Bay. If you’ve never snorkeled before, don't worry, we can show you how. If you can float and you like to have fun, you'll love snorkeling.
At Small Hope Bay Lodge, we offer daily boat trips to the reef, visiting different sites each day at depths ranging from 10 to 20 feet (3 to 6 metres). For descriptions of some of the fabulous shallow reefs we visit regularly on our snorkeling trips, click here.
We also offer special excursions, like our Snorkel Safari on Fresh Creek and a chance to join divers on the Shark Observation Experience. To learn more about the shark observation experience, click here. Small Hope has all-inclusive snorkel package rates that include a daily snorkel boat trip to the reef. See our rates page for more information.
But you don't have to venture far to discover fabulous snorkeling from shore - in the hiding places around the dock, on the patch reefs off the beach and in the nearby creeks through the mangroves. We provide maps to help you find the best spots. If you're interested in learning more about the underwater environment, there's a reference library in the lodge to help you identify the myriad marine life, virtually in our backyard. |

Bonefishing
on the flats
Reef fishing & Deep Sea fishing
Overnight camping on the West Side
Andros Bahamas is laced with thousands of miles of inland waterways and fishing flats. North, Middle and South Bights cut right through the island, east to west, creating a natural access to even more flats on the west side of the island. These provide world-class conditions for fly fishermen in pursuit of bonefish and tarpon.
Andros Island, with its 140-mile long reef and its extensive inland flats offers serious challenges to spincasters and fly fishermen. Small Hope Bay Lodge has its own in-house guides and boat, plus a team of the best independent guides to offer Bonefishing, Reef Fishing, and Deep Sea Fishing. |
|

Small Hope Bay Lodge is now offering eco-tours, providing visitors an opportunity to explore the diverse environment of this Bahamian out island, the fifth largest, and least developed land mass in the Caribbean and tropical Atlantic area.
A number of guided tours are available: The Blue Hole Folklore Tour explores three different types of blue holes, the fault line, round and ocean blue hole, all formed millions of years ago. The tour includes an introduction to local folklore, such as legends of mythological creatures like the Lusca, half shark and half octopus, reputed to inhabit the blue holes.
History buffs can Plunge into the Past, touring through the varied vegetation of North Andros, with stops at sites like Morgan's Bluff and Henry Morgan's Cave, namesakes of a 17th century pirate who's treasure is said to be buried on the island.
Local culture is the focus of the Settlers of the Big Yard tour, which visits different settlements on Andros, like a working Mennonite Farm and Red Bays, where descendents of Florida's Seminole Indians still live. Another tour explores the wetlands on the west side of the island, known as "the muds". Only accessible by boat, this uninhabited water-dominated landscape is a rich breeding habitat for fish and birds.
Guests also may take self-guided tours on foot, by bike or kayak, using maps and literature provided by the lodge to explore trails, blue holes, mangrove swashes and other natural wonders, many starting right on the beach at Small Hope Bay.
Andros is a paradise for birders and naturalists. 50 species of orchids have been found here anmd more than 300 species of birds have been recorded in the Bahamas. One hundred and nine species breed in the Bahamas, 169 species are migrants or winter here, and 45 species are endemic. Some, like the Greater Flamingo and the Bahama race of the Cuban Parrot, can only be found in the wild on one or two of the islands.
Most of the breeding birds are part of the West Indian rather than North American avifauna, a fact that harkens back to the last Ice Age, when Andros was a mere five miles from what is now Cuba.
The island is 108 miles long and 46 miles at its widest point. Built of layers of coral limestone, the land mass of Andros has a great variety of ecosystems, with virgin forests of pine and mahogany in the northern interior, and low-lying broad leafed deciduous in the center. Inland waterways and mangrove marshlands provide a breeding and feeding habitat for fish and bird life, and a food source for the surrounding reef.
Just off shore, lies the Andros Barrier Reef, the world's third longest reef system, which plunges to the Tongue of Ocean at a depth of 6,000 feet -- providing spectacular vistas for underwater eco-exploration.

Get married on the beach in a simple ceremony by the
sea. We'll arrange it all, plus a reception for up to
forty of your closest friends. All you have to do is
show up!
We'll
build you an arch of flowers, and make head wreaths,
anklets, corsages and bouquets using blooms from our
nearby gardens. We will decorate our outdoor patio
with colorful Androsia fabric, ferns, and flowers
and let the sea provide its own magnificent backdrop.
We'll
arrange the paper work and contact the appropriate

curried chicken wings, and more. An elegant tropical-style
wedding cake, and sparkling champagne complete the
celebration, that usually rolls right into the dinner
hour at Small Hope Bay Lodge.
